Monday Monday

Posted by Lauren · Monday, March 30th, 2009 · Filed in Family

The Monday after spring break is always extra hard, and this one was no exception. We had a pretty good spring break, as well as a good visit with family this weekend. We almost didn't make our trip to visit Jay's mom, because Jay was so worn out from dealing with stuff at work, but I'm glad we were able to get away. On top of that, Eliza started running a fever Thursday morning. I took her to the doctor to check it out since we were leaving that night to go out of town, and he confirmed that it was probably just a virus. So we left Thursday night for Memphis, where we spent the night with my Granny and left our rats for her to look after. Friday morning we left to meet Jay's mom in Philadelphia, MS, for lunch at Mamaw Barrett's house. We had some good home-cooking there!

We continued our trip on to Jay's mom's house, and James got to ride with Mamaw in her car. They had some good discussion, I heard! They talked a lot about gambling, as we passed the casinos at the Choctaw reservation in Philadelphia. Unfortunately, it was hard to convince James that gambling was a really bad idea! Eliza did well despite her fever. She did take a nap in the car which made it really hard to get her to sleep Friday night!

Saturday we had fun hanging out with Mamaw and visiting the library where she works. We also took her to supper at Cracker Barrel for her birthday, which was earlier this month. We slept in a little Sunday, then got ready to drive to Memphis then home. In Memphis, we got to see lots of my family, including my brother Joseph and his wife Nicole, who were there for the weekend. It was great to see them!

We are tired from our trip, but glad for the opportunity to visit with family. We got to our house around 11:30 last night, which made for an extra difficult Monday morning. After getting James to school and letting the tv entertain Eliza, I napped on the couch for a while this morning. I feel almost human again!

Rat hammock

Spring break has been a pretty lazy week for me and the kids, but not so for Jay! Things have been very crazy and stressful at work, and that has been hard on him. He could use some prayers.

In other news, I finished one of my projects for the rats…they now have a new hammock:

Hammock

Here is the lovely Gabby modeling it for you! The rats have not really taken a liking to it yet, but I think they will enjoy it more as they get braver. The other project…well, I'm still trying to decide if it is do-able. Sometimes I get in a little over my head with my sewing projects.

Hooray for spring break!

Community group was at our house tonight, which means I have spent the last two days (except while at church this morning) trying to get my house suitable for company. Community group went well, the kids are in bed, and I am happy. Worn out, but happy. Plus we don't have to go anywhere tomorrow!

I am looking forward to spring break…the kids and I get to sleep in! Of course, you know that means they'll be up at the crack of dawn every morning, just because they can! I am excited about doing some sewing this week for the rats. I have been wanting to make a hammock and a hanging tube for their cage, and I finally have time to do it! If they turn out halfway decent, I will post pictures. :)

We are also looking forward to seeing Jay's mom this week. Jay has Friday off, so it will be a long weekend for him. It will be a good trip! Happy Spring Break!

James' song

James woke up this morning excited about church (or maybe just the pancake breakfast they're having there this morning), but he also had something else on his mind. As I was getting ready, he started singing, "Oh, yeah, nuttin' tomorrow! Oh, yeah, nuttin' tomorrow!" That's how I feel about Spring Break, too!

They are a little shy now, still getting used to their new home, but they are very sweet and playful! It has been so good having rats again.

Our rat story

I was first introduced to rats as pets by my aunt, who had rescued a class pet from being tortured by students. When my roommate in college decided we needed a pet, it didn't seem very strange to get a pair of rats. Unfortunately, we were not allowed to keep them in the dorm, and we also found out that the pet store had given us a boy and a girl (it's a wonder she didn't get pregnant!) My family took the boy, named Eddie, and my Aunt Dianna (same as above) took Ebony. Eddie was a great pet. He loved to cuddle; in fact, you could sit with him in your lap while you watched TV and he would just sleep. He was also a kisser…he would lick your hand all day if you let him.

After Jay and I got married, it felt wrong for me to be in vet school and have no pets. I was also needing something small to take care of. Jay had never had a pet in his life (well, he admitted to keeping one box turtle for a week or so to earn a badge for Scouts). So when I mentioned rats, Jay was a little skeptical. He had met Eddie, but wasn't that interested in him at the time. But after doing a little research on the internet (what else would he do?), he came to the conclusion that maybe rats wouldn't be so bad.

We bought Gracie at a pet store in Little Rock while visiting my family (we were living in Mississippi). She was light gray, and small and cute, and we thought she was a boy (wrong!) After doing some more research, we found out that rats need a friend to really be happy, so we brought home a boy rat from the local pet shop in Starkville, and noticed they were very different. Thankfully, they let us bring it back and exchange it for a girl. Rosie was black, and bigger and much more timid than Gracie, but they were happy together. Gracie was fearless; she ran through the house when I let them out to play, climbing the curtains and jumping from the back of the couch to the coat rack. Two weeks after we got her, she was playing in our room while Jay was changing clothes. Jay lifted his foot to put on his pants, then set it down in the same place, unaware that Gracie had run up under him at that moment. She squealed as Jay put nearly all of his weight on her, and she lay lifeless for a few moments. We quickly took her to the vet school's emergency room (it was a Sunday afternoon), asking them to consider putting her to sleep because we were sure she was not going to recover. They took her back while we waited for them to examine her. They brought her to us a few minutes later, saying, "Are you sure you want to put her to sleep?" She was looking around, licking their hands, and acting like nothing had happened. We took her home, thankful that she seemed to have escaped unharmed. We did have her x-rayed a few days later just to make sure nothing was broken…she had some bruising in her lungs, but that was it.

Gracie was too good to be true. She would usually come when I called her, and she loved being picked up and played with. She gave lots of kisses; one of her favorite things to do was sit on Jay's shoulder and lick his nose. Rosie finally got to where she would come hide behind me if I sat in the floor, but she still seemed terrified of every noise or movement. We called Gracie "our rat", and Rosie became "Gracie's rat". They really did enjoy each other's company.

One bad thing about rats is their short life span. They only live around 2 years, which is just not enough time to enjoy them. Gracie died while I was pregnant with James, and Rosie passed away soon after he was born. We couldn't get more rats at the time; we had just moved to Little Rock for Jay's new job (a month after James was born) and were living with my family while we looked for a house. Through the years we have talked about getting some more rats, but we just now feel like life has slowed down enough that we have time to devote to these incredible animals! We are aware that there will probably never be another rat as good as sweet Gracie, but we are content to have a few that enjoy our company as we enjoy theirs. On Saturday, we drove to Dallas to pick up three cute baby girls, and we look forward to sharing their stories with you!

Like father, like daughter

Jay likes to misinterpret things. He has a good sense of humor, and I think he must have passed it on to our kids. They are always saying funny stuff, just like their Daddy. Here is an example:

I had just gotten through tucking James into bed and was singing Eliza her nightly lullaby, when I heard James yell to me from his room. I kept singing: "Twinkle, twinkle, little star" (then yelled) "JUST A MINUTE JAMES!" (then continued singing) "How I wonder what you are." Eliza giggled and said, "Does the song go, 'Twinkle, twinkle, little star, just a minute James'?" She thought it was quite funny. The little booger!

I am a Warrior Princess

I am a little down today. For some reason, it's hard to admit that. Maybe it's the weather, but I've also been hit with a wave of bad news. It's not that any of it directly affects me or anyone I'm really close to, but it's still just sad. Makes me homesick for Heaven!

Bible Study was good this morning…I love Beth Moore! It's also just good to be with a group of ladies who are there to support, encourage, listen, and love. We all have struggles, and it's nice to know we're not alone! I know that God is in control, and he's working this out for our good! Even when we don't understand. We are to trust Him, and seek to do His will. Beth Moore reminded us that we are God's Warrior Princesses. Daughters of the King, Fight the Good Fight!

Springy

Well, Eliza is still sick, but so far the rest of us have avoided it. I really think she is on the mend, but she threw up again this morning, in the car, on the way to take James to school. I think she got a little excited and drank her chocolate milk too fast for her recovering stomach. She is still sleeping a lot, but her temperature seems to be down today, which is a good sign.

Saturday, before the sickness set in, we took our annual trip to Wye Mountain to see the field of daffodils. Here are some pictures from our visit:

And in our own backyard, we have some daffodils that were bought from Wye Mountain in previous years:

This is the first year we have blooms, and we are so excited! It is beginning to look (and feel!) like spring!

Our weekend: the good, the bad, and the disgusting

Posted by Lauren · Sunday, March 8th, 2009 · Filed in Family

This has been some kind of weekend, and it's not over yet! It started out fun, as I went to a ladies' lock-in our church was having Friday night. We played games, talked, ate snacks, watched a movie, and even slept for a couple of hours on the hard floor. It has been a looong time since I slept on a floor. Let's just say it was not very comfortable, but it was an adventure!

I got home Saturday morning, and was able to get a little bit more rest there. After lunch, we headed over to Wye Mountain to see the field of daffodils, an annual tradition for our family. We got a few pictures (coming later), and the kids had fun running through the flowers. Afterward, we stopped by our Walmart to get haircuts for Jay and James. Eliza and I wandered the store and got a few groceries, and Eliza complained a little that her stomach was hurting. I wasn't too concerned; I thought she might need to use the bathroom. When we got home, we ate supper and got ready for bed. Eliza didn't eat much, but she didn't seem to feel bad, so I gave her a bath. That's when it started… she threw up in the bathtub. After we got her in the bed, she threw up again, this time all over the carpet in her bedroom. Not fun. We were up several more times during the night. She can't keep anything down! Poor girl.

Jay had to do some work this morning at UALR, so he left early. We were even ready for Daylight Savings Time change, which is an accomplishment for us…we have been known to show up an hour late for church. I had to call Mom to see if Lydia could babysit our Sunday School class, because I don't want to share Eliza's sickness with them! So that's where we are. Eliza is sitting on the couch watching TV and munching ice, then throwing most of it up. James is still asleep (I guess he really needed some extra sleep), and I'm just waiting for him to start. They are pretty good at sharing, and I have no reason to believe this will be an exception. I hope Jay and I don't get it, but I'm not getting overly optimistic. This week is already off to a great start! :)
